This is a work in progress. The script that displays the books is still being tweaked and books\ are continually being added.

\

Basic Help:
\  • Registering is free, requires only a username and password (no email address required) and allows you to have bookmarks and\ to customize to look of the books.
\  • When logged in and viewing a chapter, use right click on the paragraph to set one of the bookmarks.
\  • A book that has a bookmark will display the color of the bookmark along the top edge of each chapter in the book.
\  • A chapter that is bookmarked will be noted with a colored asterisk (*) by it\'s name in the\ Table of Contents.
\  • A paragraph that is bookmarked will show the color of the bookmark in the margin to the right of that paragraph.
\  • Right clicking on the "next >>" link will allow you to bookmark the first paragraph of the next chapter.
\  • Currently the TableTop (background) and text font are customizable. I have plans to allow customization of the text color,\ the paper color/texture, cover texture (currently a dark red leather) and the title color.

\

Browser Incompatibilties:
\  • Internet Explorer -- BytheFireplace was built to be fully\ compatible with Internet Explorer.
\  • SAFARI -- Right-click will work in Windows Safari\ but is a bit tricky. You have to right click down, then slide the arrow over. The normal Safari right click menu will popup where you release the right mouse button, but the\ BytheFireplace bookmark menu will appear where you downclicked.\ Right click won\'t work at all in Mac Safari.
\  • OPERA -- To enable Right-click click\ "tools" then "Preferences" then "Content"\ then "JavaScript options". Select "Allow script to receive\ right-clicks". Once you\'ve done that you\'ll have access to all the\ functionality at By the Fireplace.
\  • FIREFOX -- Right-click won\'t work so bookmarks can\'t be saved. If you install IE Tab that will allow the site to work in Firefox, but Firefox is an untrustworthy browser and\ you really should be using another anyway.
\  • NETSCAPE -- If you are using Netscape 8.0 make sure you are have set to “display like Internet\ Explorer” and everything should work fine. Earlier versions and other display modes will not work.

\

\
Any other suggestions and idea would be\ greatly appreciated and can be offered at the By the Fire Place Forum.

So you\'ve found my little library.\ If you\'re like me, and love books, and savor the thrill of finding those rich treasures hidden away in musty old book shops and quaint\ small town libraries, then you\'ll absolutely love this site. I\'ve collected as many of the wonderful, public-domain books that I can\ find, and have attempted to present them in as relaxed and  realistic way as possible. I\'ve tried my best to make the pages look\ like actual pages from a book. If I could put that wonderful old-book smell into code, I\'d do it.

\

Feel free to browse to your heart\'s\ content, and when you find one you want to read, make sure to register to be able to take advantage of the bookmark feature, as well\ as the other customizations available.

\

You\'ll find the help section will\ answer many of your questions and give you a good idea how to use the site. Click on “Sections” in the menu above to start\ browsing through the books.

\

If you have any suggestions or\ ideas, you can let us know by posting at the By the\ Fireplace Forum.
